Wow, what a busy week it’s been here at 15Mb! 4 speaking engagements, 3 conferences and plane journeys, 2 countries and 1 very tired David Birch 🙂

SIBOS is an annual global financial services conference taking place at a different location each year. What with the pandemic getting in the way, the last SIBOS conference took place in 2019 in London. This year was set to be bigger and better hosted at Amsterdam’s RAI venue.

David’s first session was all about the Metaverse: Destination or Journey? He was joined on stage by Paul Clarke, now an independent consultant to the government, he was previously CTO at Ocado. The pair had a lively discussion and the venue was packed!

On Wednesday, David headed over the the European Card Payments Association Conference where he had a fireside chat with John Chaplin entitled “How to make the best use of payments data”, based on the report John had put together this year. This was followed by David moderating the session, “Market and Stakeholder Perspectives” with the panel being made up by Jon Prideaux of Boku and and Vincent Roland of Worldline.

On Thursday David was back at SIBOS for the closing session on the Innotribe stage. A selection of speakers were invited to argue their case:

“Imagine if banking was…

  • distributed like a colony of ants without centralised control
  • a quantum computer – how would it work for the benefit of humans
  • the next frontier in space – what would it feel like and would it inspire
  • the weather/ our climate – how would we like to experience it
  • the metaverse – would it be an island, an experience or reality?”

David tackled the case for the metaverse being an island, experience or reality. The packed audience was asked to vote for who had convinced them most of their argument. Leda Glyptis won the audience over with her case for banking being like a distributed colony of ants without centralised control!

After this, David hopped straight on a plane to Madrid ready for The Payments Association EU’s first conference where he delivered the opening keynote on a Retail Central Bank Digital Currency for the EU.
